This conversation is part of a series of chats on camera confidence held live on Instagram. In speaking with experts in different fields, my hope is to share with you their unique insight & resources. To embolden you to connect to your audience on camera with authenticity & empathy.

For many of us, speaking on camera is something that doesn’t feel comfortable. With the pandemic, as many of us continue to use technology to connect and present our ideas to others, Kaye shared her insight and holistic approach to camera confidence. To shift out of discomfort and into ease.
We spoke about the power of mindset when it comes to stepping out of your comfort zone, and how wellbeing & your space can support you to show up as your best self, ready to achieve your goal.
As we covered so much ground during our 40 minute conversation, I’ve decided to share it across two blog posts. You can find Part One, focusing on mindset strategies here.
Kaye shared how your wellbeing can help with your confidence on camera:
WELLBEING TOP TIP: Protect your energy
Protect your energy & use your energy as a clue from where you’re at from a health point of view and a wellbeing point of view.
For example: if you wake up feeling tired, sluggish, foggy headed you’re not necessarily setting yourself up to be in the best place to present. When you present, or step out of your comfort zone - whatever that looks like for you - you want to show up as your highest energy self. Your clearest mind, so you can take on this new goal that you’ve set for yourself. Full of confidence.
Try this:
Sleep:
make sure you’re sleeping really well. Choose a time frame (the week before or a few nights in the lead up to a presentation) and protect your sleep. Create a ritual around sleep, a nighttime routine, where you’re switching off tech, all the lights are out, there’s no tech in the bedroom etc.
Eat:
The foods you choose will help you with your energy levels. And it will help you show up as your best self. So you’re not dealing with an energy crash due to sugar and caffeine. Choose whole, nourishing foods to support your energy. There’s many studies that show our mind is clearer when we choose whole foods rather than rely on processed foods.
Stay hydrated
Get fresh air
And notice how your energy levels can help you. They can help you deliver and show up as your best self.
How can space set us up for success when it comes to confidence on camera?
Space impacts your wellbeing, and due to the pandemic we’re home a lot more at the moment.
USE YOUR SPACE TO PREPARE:
How you prepare your space can be calming or energizing depending on what you feel you need for your presentation. If the space you’re presenting in is chaotic, that energy isn’t going to help. If you are someone who needs to calm your nerves, then organise your space. Clear everything away. Essential oils are beautiful for preparing, you can use lavender, clary sage - scent can be so powerful for calming your nerves. Maybe it's yoga stretches or meditation right before - make sure your space supports that. Whatever your ritual is, your home can support that to prepare you to get in the right headspace for your presentation.
If it’s energizing energy you need from your space, essential oils like peppermint, spearmint, sweet orange or citrus can really lift the sense of energy if that’s what you prefer to feel before you speak on camera.
SETUP YOUR SPACE:
It seems like a small thing but if you're showing up and happy with how your space & setup are looking, that is going to help you with your confidence.
Check your lighting. Make sure the light is in front of you, not right behind you.
Many people don’t think about this, but take the time to think about your background. How do you want your surroundings to be seen? Ask yourself ‘how does this represent my brand?’
Surround yourself with plants. They are powerful to ground a space and when we bring nature in, we ground ourselves, too.
All these things together - setting up your space, wellbeing and mindset - can help get you in a great place to really just go for it. Feel like you’re showing up from a good place, that you have a really strong foundation to jump and leap from. And achieve that goal.
As always with this series of interviews, I finished our conversation asking two questions:
Do you have a ritual or routine before going on camera?
For me the space is really important, I tidy everything around me and it helps with my mind. I take some deep breaths because my energy can be very enthusiastic, and my hands get going…! so it helps me to calm down. I have some essential oils going and I put a really gorgeous, natural scented rose & geranium oil on my hands before we started and it just (inhales) helps me relax.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to someone who wants to take a step forward, and be more confident on camera?
Get really clear on your why. Why do you want to do this? If it’s important enough, you’ll go through the different strategies we went through today, the skills Heather teaches, whatever you need to do, to achieve your goal. But it starts with why. What is your goal? Why do you want to get on camera? Why do you feel you need to do? If it’s important to you, you’ll figure out a way to do it and make it happen.
